The Story So Far

From a Small Room to a Scene

2016

The First Open Jam

Rockanova started as a Tuesday-night open jam in a rented back room with a borrowed PA and a drum kit held together by duct tape. We wanted a place where guitar bands could test new material without the pressure of a full ticketed show. Word spread fast, and within six months the room was consistently packed with local players and curious listeners.

2019

In-House Sound & Backline

Touring bands kept asking for a consistent rig, so we invested in our own backline and brought a full-time sound engineer on board. That decision changed everything. We stopped relying on whoever happened to be around and started delivering a reliable, professional stage experience. Album launches and out-of-town showcases became regular bookings.

2022

Digital Ticketing & Promoter Tools

We built a simple digital ticketing system that lets local promoters list shows, set capacity, and sell tickets without a middleman. It gave us a direct line to the audience and made it easier for emerging acts to book their own nights. The platform now handles most of our weekly gigs and festival-stage allocations.

2024

Workshops & Studio Partnerships

Artist development became a core part of what we do. We started monthly workshops on stagecraft, booking, and basic music business, and partnered with two local studios for discounted demo recording. Our monthly playlist series now highlights South African guitar-driven acts, and several artists who started at our open jams have gone on to headline their own tours.

The Road So Far

From a smoky room to a home for Cape Town rock

Every stage has a story. Here’s how Rockanova grew from a single open mic night into a hub for live music, artist development, and touring bands.

2019 — First Open Jam

A borrowed PA and 14 musicians

We started with a weekly open jam in a rented room in Observatory. No backline, no sound engineer — just a borrowed PA and a handful of guitarists who wanted somewhere to plug in. The first night, 14 musicians showed up. The second, 30.

2021 — The Venue Opens

Our own stage, our own rules

We signed the lease on our current space in Salt River. In-house sound engineering, a proper backline rental stock, and a 120-capacity room that quickly became known for loud guitars and zero attitude. Album launches and touring band showcases followed within months.

2023 — Digital Ticketing & Booking Platform

Connecting promoters with emerging talent

We built our own ticketing system and artist booking portal. Local promoters can now list gigs, sell tickets, and discover new acts without third-party fees. The platform now handles bookings for venues across Cape Town, not just our own stage.

2025 — Artist Development & Monthly Playlists

Workshops, studio partnerships, and a new sound

Our development workshops now cover stage presence, music business basics, and demo recording through local studio partnerships. The monthly playlist series shines a light on South African guitar-driven acts, with several artists going from our open jams to headlining national tours.

The People Behind the Noise

The Crew Running the Room

From front-of-house to booking desks, the Rockanova team has spent years inside Cape Town's live circuit. We know what a band needs before the first chord hits.

Thabo Nkosi

Founder & Head Booker

Fifteen years of booking underground shows across Johannesburg and Cape Town. Thabo has put together more than 400 gig nights, from sweaty club basements to open-air festival stages. He still answers every demo submission personally.

Lindiwe Mbeki

Sound Engineer & Production Lead

Trained at the SAE Institute and seasoned on touring rigs, Lindiwe has mixed front-of-house for over 200 live acts. She handles our in-house PA system, coordinates backline rentals, and makes sure every band sounds tight on stage.

Riaan van der Merwe

Artist Development & Studio Liaison

A guitarist who spent a decade in touring bands before moving behind the desk. Riaan runs our development workshops, connects artists with partner recording studios, and curates the monthly playlist spotlighting South African guitar-driven acts.

Zanele Khumalo

Ticketing & Promoter Relations

Zanele runs our digital ticketing system and works directly with local promoters to get emerging talent in front of the right crowds. She has coordinated album launches and touring band showcases for acts from Durban to Stellenbosch.

Sipho Dlamini

Stage Manager & Backline Tech

Sipho keeps the night moving. He manages changeovers between sets, maintains our rental backline, and has worked with touring international acts as well as first-time local openers. If a guitar amp dies mid-set, he's already got a spare ready.

Aisha Patel

Marketing & Playlist Curator

Aisha shapes the Rockanova voice across gig guides and social channels. She programs the monthly playlist series and writes the show previews that help Cape Town punters decide which night to hit. She's also the one booking our open jam sessions.

Cape Town's Independent Rock Hub

Where Guitar-Driven Sound Finds Its Home

Rockanova is a live music venue and artist booking platform built for the raw, unpolished energy of rock, indie, and alternative acts. We connect local promoters with emerging talent across intimate stages and outdoor festival settings.

Beyond the gigs, we run artist development workshops, partner with recording studios, and publish a monthly playlist series spotlighting South African guitar-driven acts. Our in-house sound engineering and backline rental keep the focus on the music.

Weekly Gigs & Open Jams

Every week we host live shows, album launches, and open jam sessions. Walk in, plug in, and play.

Artist Development

Workshops on stage presence, music business, and studio partnerships to help you grow from opener to headliner.

Digital Ticketing

A streamlined system that connects promoters directly with emerging talent. No middlemen, just music.
